Herbert Cohen
My "presidential" grandfather

When I first arrived at Columbia University in the early 1980s, the administration contacted me to see if a grad student who was writing a play about the Hex Murder Trial could interview me about my grandfather, who, in his 20s, was the public defender of John Blymire, the primary perp. During 1928-29, the case was covered nationally, in the New York Daily News and in papers across the nation. However, that MFA Writing student had to tell me about the Hex Trial — because I knew nothing about it. As a matter of fact, it was not until the 2000s that I began learning about my grandfather's giant career. My middle-class family in York, PA has been overly humble for generations, and not wealthy. Other than encouraging me to go for it in life, they never helped me to accomplish anything. Delusional bigots and misogynists (of all races and religions) — total strangers — smearing me for decades with antisemitic, murderous Jewish princess stereotypes — motivated by crude envy and their own wild libidos — are projecting their own spoiled, safer upbringings onto me. Obviously, they are always lying about me...that's why they use nicknames, code, symbols — but never my real name — like Nixon did, like junior high gangs do. Setting the record straight now — while also proudly and unapologetically sharing facts about my family's contributions.

My presidential Grandfather was an extroverted political star, and real, and down-to-earth. Tough, moral and compassionate. He was a true populist — not a fake condescending one. Herbert Cohen was nationally famous in his 20s. He was handsome and athletic, a talented basketball player, golfer and dancer. The son of Jewish immigrants, in early 20th Century America he became a popular, respected political star — a miracle. Herbert Cohen was widely recognized as the real leader of the PA Democrats and credited for turning Pennsylvania blue — not his protégé and follower, George Leader.

Herbert Cohen never accommmodated America's normalized anti-Semtic stereotypes and never changed his Jewish name to succeed. Against all odds, Nationally famous in his 20s as a public defender in the HEX Murder Trial, when he was elected in 1932 as the first Democrat from York to the Pennsylvania House, it was called the “presidential election” of '32. Herbert Cohen's political protégé, George Leader, chose him as his first cabinet pick as Pennsylvania Attorney General.
